Stockley Arena

Our approach to extending this significant piece of late 80’s commercial architecture by Ove Arup near Heathrow Airport has been deliberately low key: the simple assemblage of proposed forms and materials are intended to work within the existing composition, setting up a regular background rhythm which the rich variety of the original building’s formal elements can play off against.

A portal frame structure of engineered timber provides column free floor areas allowing for easily adaptable and dividable interior office spaces, ensuring a range of tenancy options and offers much potential for off-site prefabrication, minimising disruption to existing occupants.

The deep reveals of the engineered timber fins protect the extensive areas of south facing glazing from unwanted solar gain and also provide a subtly changing perception of solidity and transparency depending on viewing angle.
