Barn Conversion
Essex

Intriguing little project this one, exploring the potential to create 3 residential units within the built envelope of an existing goat shed and chicken coops through the permitted development rights (PDR) introduced in April 2014.

The quirkiness of the existing forms gave the proposed dwellings their own distinct character without any of the rooms being overly-compromised either in size or configuration. Approached from a tree-lined access road leading to communal parking areas and, relatively closed, north-sided entrance elevations the primary rooms are all orientated southwards overlooking open fields beyond the private gardens which incorporate a number of mature trees.

A robust, sustainable and economic range of materials and are proposed including black-stained decking timber (as previously used at Uplands Road) on highly insulated timber frame external walls on a red brickwork plinth (accommodating the variations in surrounding ground levels) and brick paver floor with underfloor heating. Internal walls are finished in orientated strand board, as in our Petit Bayle.
