Country Courtyards
Option 1

Another residential development in the countryside, in this case to be built on brownfield land previously occupied by a series of former agricultural buildings. Although project specific, the courtyard typology (intended to offer increased densities above the suburban norm while maintaining levels of privacy) could work as a stand-alone house.
A gate in the perforated brick wall opens to the courtyard with the main entrance into the house being at the corner of a double height porch or colonnade, perhaps giving some unexpected scale and degree of formality, as well as providing a sheltered external perimeter space for the main ground level living areas of the house to extend onto.

Upstairs the main bedroom, with ensuite bathroom, overlooks the double height living space with a framed viewed in the end wall beyond. Bedrooms 2 and 3 share a bathroom accessed off a corridor overlooking the courtyard. A fourth bedroom-cum-office is situated immediately adjacent to the main entrance and abuts the utility room and integrated garage.
The combination of clay roof tiles, reddish brick and black stained timber are typical of the rural setting.
