Clos De Mas
Le Lot  France

Situated in the Lot region of south west France near Cahors, the brief for this barn conversion was fairly typical for the area involving the creation of living, dining and open plan kitchen spaces, three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms along with the swimming pool and, always nice to have, sauna. Slightly more unusual however, was the request to amend a previous architect’s, somewhat eccentric, design which had been partially constructed.

Again working in collaboration with Vicky Thornton, our approach sought to rationalise the plan to create a simpler, more efficient internal layout while reusing as much of the new build walls and first-fix plumbing as possible. Externally, the new pitched roof over the west facing balcony is removed and replaced with a simple rendered surround intended to be clearly perceived as a contemporary addition. Other external elements include a series of sliding timber slatted shutters for sun shading to the glazed doors and windows. The new staircase wrapping around an existing timber column is similarly enclosed in timber slats.
