Loft Apartment
Kings Cross, London
This project explored the potential for inserting additional floorspace within an existing penthouse apartment which was part of an early phase of the Kings Cross gentrifying regeneration of former industrial buildings.
Using a straight grained oak faced plywood as a consistent finish to the new mezzanine, stair, cupboards and kitchen cabinetry integrates these parts into a single element and, along with the white plaster finish of the 1990’s fit-out, contrasts the characterful timber trusses of the original building. The option of exposing more of the original brickwork is also being considered. Other proposed materials include cast concrete kitchen worktops, a glass floor to the staircase landing above the entrance and 50 x 10mm steel flats for handrails.
