Montbarla (study 1)
Tarn et Garonne   France

This is our first study for an ongoing residential project in the Tarn et Garonne region of south western France.

The form, layout and materiality and all influenced by, and directly responsive to, the context and character of this steeply sloping greenfield site enjoying expansive south facing views across the landscape.

Like the nearby Petit Bayle house, our approach is intended to be robust and low tech, with principles of passive heating and cooling, avoiding the need for air conditioning or mechanical ventilation. The potential for using solar thermal panels, rainwater harvesting, and locally sourced materials will all be explored.

This study proposes using a lime render on aerated concrete blockwork in a simple solid wall construction expressing the qualities of thickness and weight associated with traditional masonry construction, but without the compromised thermal performance, or intensity of labour. The lime render would have a large aggregate giving a rougher external appearance with a more refined version used internally.
