Montbarla (study 2)
Tarn et Garonne   France

This study for an ongoing residential project, in the Tarn et Garonne region of south western France, was done in response to an expanded client brief and explores the potential of a courtyard typology to provide a richer variety of interiors and controlled views out across the landscape, along with an extra bedroom and, of course, ‘outdoor living room’ space of the courtyard.

We are again proposing to use a lime render on aerated concrete blockwork in a simple solid wall construction expressing the qualities of thickness and weight associated with traditional masonry construction, but without the compromised thermal performance, or intensity of labour. Laminated timber mullions behind the courtyard glazing are to be of a sufficient depth to act as structure and continue into the simple monopitch roof structure.

Our approach is robust and low tech, incorporating high levels of insulation, principles of passive heating and cooling, and natural ventilation. Solar thermal panels, rainwater harvesting, and locally sourced materials will be used.
