Uplands Road
London N8
The principal objectives for this garden extension of a terrace house in the Crouch End area of north London, were to provide an enhanced feeling of space, light and connectivity to the garden. Our response was to replace the pre-existing low-ceilinged extension with a simple folding form, in both plan and section, incorporating large areas of glazing.
The predominant external material is ebony-stained timber decking used as an open-jointed rainscreen cladding. This contrasts the smooth white plaster finish of the interior and polished screed floor, fitted with underfloor heating. Anodized golden-bronze aluminium folding-sliding doors extensively open the space up to the terrace and garden beyond.
The roof is planted, adding some visual delight to the ‘second elevation’ enjoyed from the upper floors of the house and, indeed, neighbouring properties.
